1918 Keuffel & Esser Model 5225 Marine Sextant Serial No. 36485

This is the beginning of my attempt to document the cleaning and restoration of this antique, which should not be confused for unusable, 1918 Sextant, made by the New York firm of Keuffel & Esser Co. I would like to document this and post updates toward the goal of again putting to sea and taking sights. Any interest or advice is welcome! Members of the Foundation for Safe Boating are specially thanked for their support and service!

Linden Endowment for the Arts, or LEA™

“Linden Endowment for the Arts has granted RJ Kikuchiyo a 3-month residency in LEA2, where an “Open Studio” retrospective of work from 2006-2016 will be open to the public.
Also on site is the Bauhaus Museum and collected works by Steadman Kondor, of 1920s Berlin”

Linden Labs™, the makers of Second Life™, have recently awarded RJ Kikuchiyo a sim for 3 months as part of the Linden Endowment for the Arts program. I’ll be using this space as an ‘open studio’ kind of environment, accessing my inventory to exhibit virtual model environments from previous projects.  I’m still sorting out what to do with the ground level, arranging a virtual city of lighthouses as a starting point. More to come and updates soon!

Gallery: Ice Boats

Based on a Caravel design, the lateen-rigged double-masted cargo trader would ply the rich seas of the ancient world.  Often these boats were built on age-old designs, with a rugged sail plan that just plain worked with a minimum of cloth material for sails.  The fore-and-aft rig allows for good upwind performance and tacking is made simple by way of the topmast rigged spar, later to become known as the boom on western designs; a requirement for sailing the Nile River, or the Coast of East Africa in the forgotten past as well as today. This vessel may be as small as 22 feet (7 meters), but could get as large as 125 feet (40 meters)!
